World Health Organization Raises Concern Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Fewer than 10% of people eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it issues its initial advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

According to forecasts, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are key obstacles to widespread availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing considerable weight, notes the agency.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Even in the current most optimistic case, the production of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages governments and firms to expand access, via measures such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

People typically begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence suggests users may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the medication, as their typical appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese raises your likelihood for developing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific cancers.

Excess weight concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
