Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered many other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say initial examinations suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
An important official commented the attack left him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
