It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to make up for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
