Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including transport use to discussions habits.
