From Acclaim to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction process.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.

“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure

But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But a few are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack.

“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Campaign Releases Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted

However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the files' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
