The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
