RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
